Destruction of the Monasteries

The Dissolution of the Monasteries, sometimes referred to as the Suppression of the Monasteries, refers to the administrative and legal processes between 1536 and 1541 by which Henry VIII disbanded monasteriesprioriesconvents and friaries inEnglandWales and Ireland; appropriated their income, disposed of their assets and provided for their former members.

The Greatest Act of Artistic Vandalism in English History

In just four years the artistic and architectural heritage of Medieval England was swept away in an orgy of vandalism and self-destruction, unparalleled in English history. Over 800 monastic sites were looted of their treasures and their buildings left to rot.
